2015 "Bookish" Resolutions

2015.

Some view the new year as a blank slate. A fresh start. The time where people can forget the past year and move on to bigger and better things. A time where people can literally redo themselves. But there are some individuals who believe that January 1st is just another rotation around the sun. They believe that you can makeover yourself (or whatever else you want to makeover) any other damn time of the year. And quite honestly, they're correct.

But no one can quite get over that feeling of starting over, whatever time of year it is. It's just that the majority choose January 1st. This is a book blog so this post is about books and the resolutions that come with being a book-lover and an avid reader.

"Bookish" resolutions can be as hard as giving up Netflix for the entire year or they can be as easy as turning on your computer, it all just depends on your goals and aspirations for yourself and your reading.

Depending on your age, your interests, and your habits as a reader your bookish resolutions can be varied.

A few resolutions to consider may include trying to diversify your reading. Meaning that if you've only read women authors in the past year, spice up your reading with a couple by some men and  some LGBTQ, although I find that the latter are harder to find. Or maybe, if you've been reading books written by white men, try reading books written by people of different colors and backgrounds. Try reading a book from every major country or continent. Or maybe just start small and switch a couple of things up. Diversity can also include genre. If you ONLY read Young Adult  try diving into a new genre slowly by reading different genres with elements that you enjoy. Whether it be dragons, erotic romance, mysteries, WWII fiction... ANYTHING. Try to switch it up.

One of the main bookish resolutions, I've come across is how many books to complete throughout the year. Many use GoodReads.com and participate in the yearly GoodReads Reading Challenge. My goal for last year was to complete 100 books and I surpassed that goal by 39 books. So for this year, I challenged myself to do  one better and complete 140 books. To some, that sounds like a lot (and it is) but others may find that a small challenge. Everyone is different and whether you want to read 30 books in a year or 500, its good to set a physical goal so you can always remember the number and keep track of where you are at.

There are so many resolutions surrounding books. Benjamin from Benjaminoftomes on YouTube created #ProjectTBR which is a project that spans the whole of 2015, in which you have to read as many books from your To Be Read shelf as possible and have the amount of books you end with on your TBR to be less than the amount you started with. You can check out Benjamin's video here:

Reading challenges, Page goals, starting a reading journal, book buying bans!! So many bookish resolutions!!!

I guess the main point I'm trying to make is to try new things. Resolutions are hard. It's difficult to change and many people give up. However, it is important to set little goals for yourself and take on each day with a fresh start. Try not go get overwhelmed. If you happen to read 500 books then great! If you didn't and that was your goal, then tweak it so you can accomplish something within your reach. But overall, have fun. THIS IS READING, PEOPLE! It's not a chore, it's a passion and an obsession, so why not make the best of it?

Please comment down below what your bookish resolutions are!

I hope you had a wonderful 2014. Here's to 2015 and all the literary pleasures it brings!
